How To Avocado Dye Paper

I love to use natural products for my artwork. When I saw avocado dyed fabric the first time I was hooked. I could not believe that you can get such bright pinks from brown avocado skins.

Years ago I tried to dye paper with tea and coffee and had good results. So why not dye paper with avocado?

For the dye bath I use dark, ripe avocado fruits. It’s important to wash the green flesh off the skin. Put the avocado skin in a pot with hot water. Let the dye bath simmer till you’re satisfied with the color. Let the dye bath with the skin sit over night.

Remove the avocado skin and heating the dye bath. I tried this technique several times and noticed that you get better results when you wet your paper before putting in the avocado dye bath.

Let the paper sit till you can see the vibrant color.

I love to use such eco dyed paper for my artist book projects. If you want to learn more about how I use this technique for my art projects, my new online class is in progress and will be available soon.
