washi tape booklet – How to make your own. https://lydiarink.de/washi-tape-booklet-how-to-make-your-own https://lydiarink.de/washi-tape-booklet-how-to-make-your-own#respond Tue, 18 Jun 2019 10:23:41 +0000 http://lydiarink.de/?p=1698 A few weeks ago I wrote about my travel collage kit. A few weeks ago I wrote about my travel collage kit. And I got a lot of requests about my washi tape travel booklet and how you can make such a booklet.

This little tutorial is for you.

Here is a description and –> on youtube you will find a how to video

Material & tools you need:
– watercolor paper for the cover piece
– 3 clear L-shape file folder as pages
– pencil, ruler, scissors, cutting knife, bookbinding thread & needle,
– paper clips
– cutting mat

cutting & folding the pages:
– size: 21x21cm (8×8 inch)
– when you use 3 clear file folder you will get six square sheets
– fold the square sheets in half
– cut the watercolor paper the same size as your square pages
– fold the paper in half
– put the pages together and in the cover
– use paper clips to fix the pages

binding the booklet:
– find the middle of the spine and poke a hole with the needle
– find the middle on the left and poke a hole, do the same on the right side
– prepare the binding thread (3 times the length of the book spine)
– start binding, put the needle from inside through the middle hole
– go from outside to inside through the hole on the right to the hole on the left
– and back from outside to inside through the middle hole
– tie a knot to secure the thread

elastic strap closure:
– I like to add an elastic strap closure to my booklets
–> here is a little trick to add this thick elastic strap through the small hole on the book spine
– use a bit of the binding thread, fold in half, make a loop
– put the thread to the middle hole on the book spine
– use the thread loop on the inside the booklet as support for the elastic strap, pull the thread through the hole and the elastic strap will easily follow
– tie a knot to secure the elastic strap

YEAH! your booklet is now ready for using!

add your washi tape and enjoy your washi travel tape!

I would love to see your creations! Please share on instagram using the hashtag „washitraveltape“!

When you love doing image transfer or monoprinting as much as I do, you have a lot of prints in your stack. I always try to use my stuff for all kinds of creative projects. So what to do with all these monoprints?

To create this journal I used 18 printed pages, watercolor paper for the cover and an elastic strap for closure. I love to use such handmade journals for:

– doodleing
– daily journaling
– idea lists
– quotes
– to do lists
– planning
– scrapbooking
– grocery lists
– collage

What kind of journal do you use?

It’s always exciting to see other artists work space or studio. So as I love it so much to see studio spaces I thought I should show you my studio, too.

When we moved to our new home I finally got the chance to get my own little studio. And I’m totally in love with it. Since then I always worked on the kitchen table and I had to move my materials from one corner to another.

When I go into my studio to work on my projects I enjoy every minute of it. I have 2 work tables. On for bigger work and one for smaller things and I can use both for filming, too. Then I have a small desk for my computer, but I use it only every now and then. And I arranged a small working place for my little one, so he can play with his crayons while I’m working.

Do you have a dream studio in mind?
How would that look like?
What would you create in this studio?
Would like to hear your thoughts!

I like to create every day. Even on vacation I need a small travel collage kit so I have the chance to create a little bit.

What I put in my kit depends on what kind of transportation we use for our trip. In this case we go by car and there are no restrictions, beside the size.

What’s in my travel collage kit:
– notebook, one or two journals, a self-made booklet for washi tape
– scissors and scalpel, sharpener
– glue stick and all purpose glue
– a folder with collage scraps
– colored pencils, crayons, pencil, fountain pen and water brush
– binder clips

For my vacation journal pages I like to use all kind of scraps and found things. It’s a special way of recycling and memory making.

What’s in your travel art kit?

I love to hear from you!

Challenge yourself to grow as an artist. https://lydiarink.de/challenge-yourself-to-grow-as-an-artist https://lydiarink.de/challenge-yourself-to-grow-as-an-artist#comments Sun, 05 May 2019 13:05:19 +0000 http://lydiarink.de/?p=1606 When being creative and making art I think it's important to challenge yourself every now and then so you can grow as an artist.]]>

When being creative and making art I think it’s important to challenge yourself every now and then so you can grow as an artist.

How to do that?
When you are creating always with the same tools, the same materials and colors it feels comfortable and like home. That’s a really good thing.

But when you try new things, new materials, new colors it’s a bit like traveling to places you’ve never been. You discover new places, maybe you try strange looking food and you get in touch with interesting personalities.
There is always something that leaves some mark on you.

Be ready to step out of your comfort zone to discover new materials, new techniques and new color schemes. This can open up your creative mind, change your way of working, it will influence and enriches your art work .

I will start a little project to learn how to use magazine images for collage work. It’s totally different to my other collages because I had to cut out a lot and can’t use the wallpaper paste . I need to work very clean.

Working so small, neat and clean is definitely out of my comfort zone. That’s basically what’s called a challenge. We will see how it goes.

Which new things did you try and what has been the biggest impact on your artwork?

For my image transfers/monoprints I’m always looking for used Vogue magazines. But I use only a few pages from every issue. Now I have big piles of magazines and thought about how to use those for my art.

As I don’t like to incorporate magazine pages in my large collage work, because the paper is thin and don’t work so well with the wallpaper paste I use, I need to find another way to use these magazines.

I flipped through the magazines and picked/cut images which looks interesting to me. Now I will try to do small collages using these images. This is like a challenge for me because usually I don’t use such images for my collage work.

I will write a bit about why I like to challenge me every now and then in my next post.

P.S. Another tip:
The magazine covers are great for cutting stencils for monoprinting with a gel plate! The paper is glossy and less absorbent then other paper and it’s easy to cut even though it’s strong enough for using the stencil several times.

So, use up your stuff and keep creating!
